Understand what divorce can and can’t do for you

On Behalf of | Apr 7, 2017 | Divorce

When you are ready to end your marriage, you might already know that you need to get a divorce. It is imperative that you fully understand the limitations to a divorce so that you don’t go into the process with unreasonable expectations.

Of course, the divorce will end your marriage. As part of this, you and your ex divide up the property that you have amassed during the marriage. Although you might want the division to be exactly even, that often isn’t possible. Instead, the property is usually divided equitably. Debts might offset some of the difference in assets as you go through the property division portion of the divorce.

The divorce will also include child custody provisions if you and your ex have children together. This is often a contentious component of divorces. As you work on coming to the terms of the child custody order, remember that you should try to keep things as civil as possible. You and your ex will have years of having to remain in contact, especially if your children are young.

Divorce can also set up orders for support, including spousal and child. This doesn’t guarantee that your ex will have to provide you with enough money that you won’t have to change your standard of living.

As you think about the divorce, make sure that you work toward understanding how the Tennessee laws might impact your case. This can help you to ensure that you are remaining realistic regarding what you want to happen. As the case moves forward, you should evaluate the options that you have and make a decision based on your goals.
