What should I know about taxes after a divorce?

When you are going through a divorce, there are many things that you have to think about. This encompasses a lot of different points. One of the ones that you might not have thought about is how the divorce will impact your taxes. Of course, every situation is different so you should make sure that you consult with an attorney and an accountant prior to making any decision about your tax situation.

Keep up with changing divorce laws and procedures

In our previous blog post, we discussed how it might soon be possible to get an uncontested divorce even if you have children. This is a development that many people were looking forward to; however, it isn't going to apply to all divorces. Instead, there are certain criteria that must be met in order for this type of divorce to be used.

Uncontested divorce with children might be possible

Divorcing with children is something that isn't easy. You have to think about your children, as well as of yourself. In the eyes of the law, divorces with children have usually been considered contested so that the issues related to the children could be addressed. Recently, the Tennessee Supreme Court adopted forms and instructions that can allow parents of minor children to go through an uncontested divorce instead of having to be taken through the contested process. The new packet will be able to be used starting on Jan. 1, 2017.

Don't delay working on your divorce case

In our previous blog post, we discussed how unemployment can signal that a divorce is going to occur. If you recall, this was the case when it was the husband who was unemployed. We know that finding out that your marriage is ending is difficult in any circumstance. If you are finding this out when you are down on your luck after losing your job, it can be devastating.
