Creating your divorce support team

Divorce is a difficult process, and it often takes months or even years to come to a resolution and final decree. Legally ending your relationship can take a significant physical, emotional, mental and financial toll. It’s important to have a support system around you as you navigate this challenging time. Here are just a few people you’ll need along the way.

1. The supportive friend. Sometimes you’ll just need to get your words out, and a close friend or family member who is familiar with your situation can help tremendously. This is someone you can call day or night when you need someone to talk to and who recognizes when you need a night in to rest and recharge or need to go out and remember that there’s more to life than divorce.

2. The objective listener. Many people find counseling or therapy very helpful during and after a divorce. Talking to someone who is not emotionally involved in your situation can help you recognize when you’re getting caught up in the emotional turmoil instead of working on moving forward. This person can also often provide a fresh perspective or reflections on your current life and future goals you may not have thought of.

3. The team of advisers. You’ll likely need the help of several professionals during the course of your divorce. An accountant can help you better understand what your financial situation is likely to be after the divorce and what adjustments you may have to make, and a family law attorney can help your navigate the courts and divorce process with a focus on protecting your interests.
