Know what you should and shouldn’t do in a divorce

Going through a divorce is difficult. The emotional reactions of the situation can lead you to act in manners that aren’t normal for you. If you are in the midst of a divorce, remember these points so that you can help to protect your interests.

First, be careful what you share. Social media can be your best friend or your worst enemy. Think carefully about each status, picture or message you share. Screenshots can preserve what you say long after you delete it. Be especially careful about saying negative things.

Second, be truthful. A divorce isn’t the time to try to hide debts and assets from your ex. As tempting as it might be to hide assets, you could be in serious trouble if the court finds out that you were hiding anything.

Third, put the children first. The divorce is hard enough on your children even without you adding more stress. Be sure to think clearly as you work through the child custody issues. The ultimate goal should be finding what is best for your child and giving your child stability as soon as possible.

Fourth, think clearly and be ready to negotiate. Many divorces are handled through mediation. This means that you should be ready to go back and forth with your ex to decide who gets what in the divorce settlement. You mustn’t let your emotions rule and don’t let your ex manipulate you.

Understanding your legal rights and the options you have might help you as you work through your divorce. As you think of each option, think of the immediate and long term effects.
