How to manage negative emotions in a divorce

While you might be hopeful about having a pleasant divorce experience, the reality is that you’ll have to face some negative emotions and difficult situations. While these experiences may be unavoidable, there are ways that you can effectively manage them so that your mental health as a whole is not affected.

It’s important that you check in with yourself throughout the entire process of divorce to check that you are giving yourself enough time to heal and gain closure. The following are some ways in which you can manage negative emotions during this challenging time.

Talk things through

When we keep emotions bottled up, they tend to build over time, and you may come to the point where you feel that you are unable to handle the situation. This is why it is important that you always have someone to talk to about what you are going through. This could be a supportive friend or a therapist.

Keep a journal

Keeping a journal is another great way to get things off your chest, especially if there are things that you don’t feel comfortable sharing with another person. Try to spend 30 minutes each day writing your uncensored thoughts, and you may feel more emotionally centered as a result.

Practice mindfulness

If you are experiencing anger or anxiety, practicing mindfulness – the act of closing your eyes and focusing only on your breath – for a few minutes each day has been shown to have positive results.

If you are struggling to handle your negative emotions during your divorce, make sure that you also have adequate control of the divorce process, as this will likely make you feel more prepared.
