The divorce process can be an extremely stressful time. Apart from taking a toll on you emotionally, it may also affect you mentally and physically. It may also potentially bring forth negative emotions to the surface. Dealing with these thoughts and emotions may cause you to put your health and well-being on hold.

Self-care should still be a priority while you are going through a divorce. When you take care of yourself, you set a good example to your children about powering through an extremely challenging time and not giving up during moments of adversity. You may also be in a better position to make decisions that benefit you and your children.

Below are basic self-care tips that may help you:

Get enough exercise

Getting enough exercise when your marriage ends may help you in many ways. Apart from the physical benefits, you may also find clarity and peace of mind when you engage in physical activity. Exercise releases endorphins, which helps you think positively, and serotonin, which may help calm you down. It may also cause you to feel stronger and fitter, so you feel healthier and more confident.

Eat healthy

Eating a balanced diet gives your body the fuel it needs to function – and you need to function optimally even amid your divorce. It may be tempting to overindulge during this period, and while that is understandable, you need to consider that overeating can lead to weight gain and potential health issues. Eating mindfully and preparing your own healthy meals may even be therapeutic.

Sleep – lots of it

It may be common to have difficulty sleeping during a divorce but is important that you get adequate sleep every night. When you do not get enough sleep, you may end up making poor decisions because you might not be able to think clearly. You may also be in a better disposition when you have enough sleep.

Getting a divorce might feel like the end of the world, but you need to remember that it is not – it can be a new beginning for you and your children. Taking care of yourself during your divorce helps you take care of the people you love.
