Alimony considerations for people in Tennessee

On Behalf of | Jul 9, 2015 | Alimony

In our previous post, we discussed how alimony has changed in recent times. That post is a good reminder that when you are divorcing, you often have to fight for what you want and need. We can stand beside you as you go through every step of the divorce process.

If you feel like you are going to need alimony to make ends meet when you are divorced, you must explore the conditions that must be met in order for the court to award alimony. It is always possible that the court won’t rule that alimony is necessary. We certainly can’t promise that we can get you alimony, but we can promise you that we will work on your behalf to petition the court for alimony if your case meets the requirements for alimony.

In some cases, it might be possible to compromise for alimony payments. If that is what is going on in your case, we might discuss different types of alimony with you. Understanding how each one differs might help you during the discussion.

There are four types of alimony payments that are recognized in Tennessee. Lump-sum alimony means you get a single alimony payment. Periodic alimony means that you get more than one payment, which might be modified in the future. Rehabilitative alimony is awarded as a means to help you become able to support yourself. Transitional alimony is awarded for a specific period of time as a means to help you get on your feet.

We can help you to determine how specific alimony types and payments can affect your life. We can answer your questions to ensure that you fully understand each option.
