Know your options for resolving child custody issues

Seeing your child is important because this is the only way that you can build a relationship with the child. For parents who are divorced or no longer in a relationship, the child custody order guides them on who gets to spend time with the child when. It is important that the order is followed so that both parents get to build that relationship with their child.

There are some instances in which one parent won’t honor the child custody order. The reasons are numerous why this might happen. The noncompliant parent might be upset that child support hasn’t been paid or that the child gets to spend a specific holiday with the other parent. All of these cases have one underlying factor — the noncompliant parent has stopped focusing on what is best for the child.

We know that there are some cases in which it is in the child’s best interests to not see one or both parents. An example would be if the parent was abusive or is currently addicted to drugs. In those cases, it might be best for the child and parent to remain apart. The child custody order should reflect this so that nobody has to be noncompliant.

If you are dealing with a child custody matter, such as not being able to see your child because the other parent refuses to let you, there are options that you can consider. Learning about the steps you can take to get things corrected and put the focus back on your child can help you to make an informed choice about what you are going to do.
