Prepare your children for long-distance moves

On Behalf of | Dec 14, 2018 | Child Custody

Children are very adaptable, but they might not deal well with last-minute changes. One area that might be difficult for them to deal with is having to move. For children who have parents in the military, this is a part of regular life. There are several ways that you can help your children cope with the move when it is time for your duty station to change.

First, make sure that you let them know about the move as soon as you know. While it might not mean much to younger children, you can use this time to slowly work up to letting them know what the move will entail. Make sure you let them know that everything will be fine.

Second, try to keep the child’s schedule consistent. This might not be necessary with older children who might not need a set schedule. Pay close attention to how your children are faring through the process.

Third, let them help with the preparation. They might feel better about the move if they can help you pack up their room since they will know that their things are making into the boxes. Consider letting younger children draw on the boxes, so they know which ones theirs are.

Finally, make sure that you are ready for the move. If you have a parenting plan for your children, you need to take the steps necessary to alert the court and your ex that you are moving. Make sure you do this as early as possible so that you aren’t facing a last-minute rush. All of this can work together to take the stress out of the situation for you and your children.
