Men and women may react differently to divorce

On Behalf of | Jul 5, 2023 | Divorce

Tennessee couples going through a divorce will have a litany of concerns. While there are fundamental parts to address, people often forget about differences between how males and females react to the entire process.

How men and women might view a divorce

There are several factors that arise as part of a divorce with men and women having divergent perspectives on how to handle them. In general, people will think about:

  • Economics
  • Children
  • Moving forward in a new relationship
  • Seeking understanding
  • Psychological factors

Although the income disparity between men and women is less of an issue than it was in the past, some residue of it remains. If a woman relied on her husband as the main breadwinner, she might want answers as to how to make ends meet after the divorce.

On the other side of the coin, men are increasingly functioning as the stay-at-home partner and raising children. Still, women are viewed as the caregiver for children and could receive primary custody. This stokes concern about finances and ensuring the child spends enough time with the father.

In around seven out of 10 cases, the woman initiates the divorce. Men can be blindsided by the divorce action and overwhelmed at the sudden changes. Psychologically, there are a range of emotions both parties will face including feeling guilty, hopeless, lonely, depressed, regretful and anxious.

People should be aware of all challenges in a divorce

Child custody, child support, parenting plans, property division, spousal support – all come to the forefront in a divorce. However, people might forget about other areas that should be considered. During a divorce, weighing every issue and being prepared for the personal and legal ramifications is essential.
