Discuss holiday plans with your ex right away

The cooler autumn weather means that the holiday season is fast approaching. If you have children but aren’t in a relationship now with their other parent, now is the time that you need to look into what will happen during the holiday season. By taking the time to do this now, you can help your children know what to expect for each upcoming holiday.

Your parenting plan might have information about the schedule your child will follow. Even if this is the case, it is best to touch base with your ex to make sure that there aren’t any conflicts. It might be difficult to address possible problems. Regardless, you should work toward ensuring that your children can enjoy the festivities.

Another thing to consider is what will happen for your child’s special events. Will both parents be able to attend the holiday play at school? How will notifications for these events be handled? Are extended family members going to be able to attend?

If there are going to be joint events, including those that involve other family members, all adults must remember that a standard of conduct must be upheld. No badmouthing anyone or bringing up problematic issues should be allowed at these events. The focus must be on the children.

As you consider how the winter holidays will unfold, be sure to plan for travel times if you are leaving the area (or if your ex is). Trying to rush to get to events can be stressful, so both parents should work together to ensure that ample time is available for travel.
